The goals of the NAACP Parents’ Council of Montgomery County are academic achievement and parent involvement. Here at Blake High School, we want to sponsor several activities to also include our students. NAACP Parents’ Council Representatives to Blake High School

 

School Year – 2016-2017

The March 2017 Parents’ Council Meeting was held on Tuesday, March 21, 2017 at 6pm and featured a presentation on “Teens and Finance.”

The January 2017 meeting included a presentation related to ACTSO and course registration.

The Parents’ Council group  held a gift card drive for the month of December. We appreciate your support!

The  November meeting  included a presentation from Montgomery County Police Officer James McLain, Blake SRO, School Resource Officer. He spoke on the topics of Law Etiquette and Cyberbullying and more.

The September meeting included a presentation from Blake Assistant Principal, Mr. Norman Edwards,  on Cultural Proficiency. We appreciate him sharing this new MCPS initiative and school focus with our parents.

November 2015 Meeting

Officer James McLain, Blake SRO (School Resource Officer), spoke on the topics of Law Etiquette and Cyberbullying. Discussions also included the position of a School Resource Officer in the Public Schools,  news surrounding SROs, cameras in schools and how they are used at Blake. The presentation was on Tuesday November 17th, at 6:00pm in the Media Center.

Blake High School Senior Brings home the gold from ACT-SO! 

We are proud to announce that Blake’s own former student, Elana Harris, won 2 Gold medals at ACT-SO this summer in Philadelphia. Elana is headed to Spelman College in the Fall. Her Gold Medals were in the areas of Short Story and Original Essay.

Shane Ramsey, Grade 11, also competed at the ACT-SO event and shared his Original Poem, Surprised I’m Still Here.

ACT – SO Information

ACT-SO is an annual competition sponsored by the national NAACP organization.

The competition is open to high school students. Dr. Omari Daniels, Blake HS staff member, is our liaison. Please contact him with questions about the competition. Competition categories include STEM, Humanities, Performing Arts, Visual Arts, Culinary Arts, and Business.

Blake’s Parents’ Council Recognizes Student Achievement!

The Parents’ Council at Blake held a meeting in May 2015. The Parents’ Council, with the assistance of Ms. Beth Thomas, Blake Administrator,  were also instrumental in recognizing African American students at Blake with a Cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher with a small certificate and tasty treat!

The March Meeting

Our March meeting was held on March 17, 2015 at 6 pm and featured  Mr. Diallo K. Radway, Blake parent and Financial Planner at the World Financial Group.    His presentation “The Basic Principles of Building a Financial Foundation” included college planning as well.   The PTSA  meeting followed at 7pm, also in the Media Center.

The February Meeting

The February NAACP Parent Council meeting convened right before the monthly PTSA meeting.  We had a great presentation on 2015-16 Course Registration and the ACT-SO Competition at Blake.   Ms. Thomas stood in for Mr. Tolbert, Resource Counselor (and also for Principal Berry) – great job!Ms. Thomas reminds parents of the importance of course registration. Cards were due Friday, Feb. 6, 2105

In addition to ACT-SO, Dr. Daniel also spoke about the Q3 Kickoff of the Academic Intervention Program, sponsored by the Blake NAACP Parents’ Council and the Montgomery County, MD Section, National Council of Negro Women, Inc. (NCNW).  The cohort of 40 students who are ineligible will be rewarded for participation in academic interventions and ultimately reaching their  target goal : GPA >= 2.0

The Blake NAACP Parents’ Council Black History Month Daily Trivia Contest has begun in Social Studies classes – one winner per week gets a gift card!

October 13, 2014       Donuts for Dads -Columbus Day Open House

Donuts for Dads

Dads enjoyed the opportunity to mingle with each other following the Donuts for Dads event.

Thanks to everyone who attended Donuts for Dads, especially Blake staff – Assistant Principal Rudy Tyrell, Principal Chris Berry and Dr. Omari Daniel.  This event was held on Columbus Day, traditionally a day that MCPS holds “Open House” at all schools.  We had Dads (and Moms!) contribute to a lively discussion.  Several parents volunteered to assist Mr. Tyrell with his mentoring efforts.Thanks to everyone who attended Donuts for Dads, especially Blake staff – Assistant Principal Rudy Tyrell, Principal Chris Berry and Dr. Omari Daniel.  This event was held on Columbus Day, traditionally a day that MCPS holds “Open House” at all schools.  We had Dads (and Moms!) contribute to a lively discussion.  Several parents volunteered to assist Mr. Tyrell with his mentoring efforts.

September 16, 2014  Meet and Greet         6pm  Blake High School

What a great turn out for our first meeting of the school year!  Thanks to Ms. Monica Abuliak for the great presentation on Closing the Achievement Gap, by focusing on our Ineligibility rates and many Intervention programs.  We welcomed our new administration sponsor, Ms. Beth Thomas, who spoke about College Readiness and Testing.  Principal Berry gave us important updates, and we announced our new teacher liaison, Dr. Omari Daniel.   And our PTSA Meeting followed at 7pm.
