NAMI MC Free Parenting Class

NAMI Montgomery County will be hosting a FREE 6 week parenting class called NAMI Basics.  This class is for parents who have a child or adolescent living with mental illness.  The class will cover the following topics:

  • The biology of mental illness
  • Getting an accurate diagnosis
  • Overview of treatment options and the latest research
  • Crisis planning and record keeping
  • Coping and problem solving skills
  • Listening and communication techniques
The class will be held on Monday evenings from 7:00pm to 9:30pm at our office located at 11718 Parklawn Drive in Rockville behind the Karpet King and Lighting Unlimited.  The dates of the class are:

  • May 16
  • May 23

April 26—Social Thinking Across the Home and School Day: The ILAUGH Model of Social Cognition
Examine ways to better understand the inner minds of your students and why they react the way they do; Learn related treatment strategies; Explore the ILAUGH model of social cognition that helps to reveal how social-processing difficulties affect not only social skills but also the ability to work as part of a group and focus on a range of academic tasks; Address the writing of IEP goals that lead to real, albeit slow, improvements; Examine the problems with using only standardized tests to qualify these students.

April 27—Thinking About YOU Thinking About ME
Explore functional educational strategies that facilitate growth in the social thinking of students who function higher on the autism spectrum or who have similar diagnosed or undiagnosed social challenges; Learn how the Social Thinking model of “perspective-taking” makes Theory of Mind practical for treating students; Understand your own ability to take the perspectives of others and why this is important for all interpersonal relationships; Learn a four-step model for developing the thinking required for developing social and communication skills in students.
