H1N1 vaccine clinics

Beginning later this month, FREE H1N1 vaccination clinics (providing nasal spray and injectable) will be held for all children and young adults, including public and private school students, ages six months to 24 years, on the following dates and times at the three locations listed below:

Wednesday, October 28 from 4 to 8 p.m.
Wednesday, November 4 from 4 to 8 p.m.
Wednesday, November 11 from 4 to 8 p.m.
Wednesday, November 18 from 4 to 8 p.m.

Northwood High School

Northwest High School
13501 Richter Farm Road, Germantown

Rockville High School

Health officials recommend that everyone consider receiving an H1N1 vaccination. Clinics for the general public will be held at a later date.  Dates and locations for those clinics will be posted when information is available.  In addition to local health departments, retail locations and some private physicians will be receiving the H1N1 vaccine, as well.
Montgomery County’s flu hotline — 240-777-4200– is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The H1N1 virus is considered widespread in the community at this time.  Montgomery County’s Health and Human Services has received doses of intranasal H1N1 vaccine (nasal spray) and injectable H1N1 flu vaccine (flu shots).  Consent forms must be filled out at the clinic.

SSL Opportunity: Interfaith Works Holiday Giving Project

What is the Holiday Giving Project?

For over 30 years, the Holiday Giving Project has helped low income families in our community by collecting and distributing gifts and food during Thanksgiving and the December Holidays. A network of social workers, school counselors and other professionals qualify and refer those who need help. A coalition of nonprofit agencies divides the county’s zip codes and takes responsibility for meeting the needs of persons referred to the program within their zip code. The coalition includes additional partners such as the Marine Corps Toys for Tots and Salvation Army’s Angel Tree program to make sure information is shared so that more families are able to be served. With the help of hundreds of individuals, families, and corporate, civic, youth and faith groups, the coalition is able to provide holiday meals, holiday baskets, gift cards, toys, etc. Last year 9,000 families received assistance so they too could celebrate the holidays. Interfaith Works is the lead agency in managing the Holiday Giving Project.

If you have any questions or want to explore other ways you can help, please contact Susan Klavon at Interfaith Works, 301-315-1094, sklavon@iworksmcDOTorg.

Blake safe-driving race revs up participation

excerpts:

Five years after 16-year-old Blake High School student Alicia Betancourt was killed in a car crash, organizers of an annual 5K race that reminds students to drive safely in her memory hope to boost participation in the program among newer students in the school….

The race was initially held by Betancourt’s mother, Lulu Delacre, to create a scholarship fund in memory of her daughter. After reaching the scholarship’s monetary goal, the event became a fundraiser for post-prom activities and a way to create awareness of safe-driving techniques, according to Janice Hylton, event coordinator and mother of David Hylton.

2009 Reflections Arts Contest

Blake is participating in the National PTA’s Reflections Program, which recognizes achievements in the arts, in an effort to raise community awareness of the arts and arts education. The winners of Blake’s contest will go on to the county level, and can compete, up to the national level.

The Theme for this year is “Beauty is….” Original works are a requirement and there are guidelines to which entries must adhere. Student submissions are due in the Main Office on Tuesday, December 1, 2009, no later than 3:00 p.m.

The six categories of the arts are:

1. Literature
2. Musical Composition
3. Dance Choreography
4. Film Production
5. Photography
6. Visual Arts

As the finest Arts school in Montgomery County, we hope that you will encourage your student to take this opportunity to show their talent. Blake should sweep the competition at the county level! We have the chance to forward as many as four entries per category. Prizes and certificates will be awarded to the winners.
